Case Study - Cake Ordering

Project Introduction

The goal of the case study was to design a responsive website for a bakery that offers an online cake ordering service. Apart from a standard offering, the bakery does also provide functionality for users to customize cake orders according to their needs.

My role

For this case study I was working on my own with no team around. Based on a project prompt, I conducted user interviews, layed out a structure and a flow for the website, created low and high-fidelity prototypes and tested these in a usability study to polish the final designs.

First things first... Users.

When I received my prompt I started off with an extensive audit of my competitors. Typically a task for later in the project. But I knew so little about cakes and pastry that I wanted to learn as much as I could right from the start. This has also helped me to spot areas that had potential for improvement later in my own designs. I then went into the first round of research. Many of my friends and family members have volunteered to participate in user interviews, so that I was able to gather great insight and finally come up with a user persona.

From problem to solution

After I got a good understanding of the users, their problems, and what they wish for, I began thinking about the brand and its value proposition. The offer to customize cakes is a unique selling point that sets Bake-my-Cake apart from other online bakeries.

Ideas

While brainstorming solutions I started creating sketches for how and when users will interact with the site. Putting myself in the users position has created a clear picture of the structure and flow that was required for the site.

Usability observations

From the sketches I went on to design wireframes and put them together in a low-fi prototype. As I wanted to get user feedback before polishing my designs, I've run a usability study with about a dozen users of my target group, which has revelead that many of the mums have actally used the site together with their kids.

Based on this observation, I gained a valueable insight to make the design and the functionality more kids-friendly. I wanted to include children in my target group and I increased the font and button size in my mockups and also replaced some of the copy with images.
